The BC Foundation for Non-Animal Research is proud to announce it is providing over $17,000 to successful applicants through our 2024 grant funding. This is the first year we our providing two grants to individual researchers for their exciting work in non-animal research. BC FNAR received a number of competitive submissions this year and we want to thank all applicants for participating in the grant process.
2024 Successful Applicants

Stephanie Willerth, Ph.D., P.Eng., FCSSE, FBSE Professor of Biomedical Engineering at University of Victoria.
Her project involves 3D bioprinting human neural tissues. Stephanie is awarded $10,000 of funding from BC FNAR to be used to support a recent graduate to work on this project. Congratulations Stephanie!

Professor Anotida Madzvamuse
Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Theoretical and Computational Biology (2023-2030)
University of British Columbia
His project involves building towards synthetic artificial cells using mathematics for biomedical research. He is awarded $7,500 for funding a student to continue research on this project. Congratulations Anotida!
The BC FNAR Board of Directors is grateful to be able to provide these grants to continue to support the work of researchers using Non Animal Methods (NAM’s) in B.C. and across Canada. We also want to recognize the applicants from outside of Canada who submitted competitive applications, but who we are not able to fund due to our mandate.
NAMs continue to supplant animal methods globally as research continues to show their equivalent and superior viability. However, we also recognize that we are only scratching the surface and Canada especially has a long way to go in decreasing the number of animals used in research annually.
That is why BC FNAR is looking forward to a future without animal testing, but knows funding of researchers deeply committed to NAMs is of the utmost importance. Opportunities to receive funding from traditional institutionalized means is limited because proposed work using animal models is often given priority.
If you would like to support our work in ensuring researchers committed to using non-animal methods continue to be funded, please consider donating to BC FNAR here.
Thank you for your generosity and shared vision to end animal testing.
